Tēnā koutou katoa

The Public Health Association of New Zealand (PHANZ) Māori Caucus held its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 20 November 2024. The primary focus of the AGM was to elect caucus officers for the next two years, including the Chairperson who would also join the Executive Council as one of the five Māori representatives.

Appointment of Māori Caucus Chairperson and Māori Representative to the Executive Council.
We are excited to announce that Dr Angelique Reweti was appointed the Māori Caucus Chairperson and Māori Representative to the Executive Council. We are equally exited to announce that Jean Rangiwai was appointed the Māori Caucus Treasurer.

Dr. Angelique Reweti (Ngāpuhi, with connections to Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga and Tainui) is a dedicated advocate for Māori health and well-being. A mother of three, she balances raising her tamariki with her professional roles as a lecturer and researcher at Massey University, focusing on Public Health, Health Promotion, and Hauora.

Her work emphasises strengths-based approaches that highlight Māori resilience and mana, aiming to shift narratives away from deficit models.

Jean Rangiwai (Ngāti Porou) is a dedicated leader with extensive expertise in law, accounting, and Māori health policy. A Chartered Accountant, lawyer, and mentor, she holds degrees in Public Policy and Health, focusing on Māori health outcomes and colonisation's impact on health disparities. Jean's career spans roles in Inland Revenue, consultancy for community organisations, and her current position with Te Kurahuna Limited, supporting Indigenous health approaches. Passionate about rangatahi suicide prevention and primary health improvements, she is a vital contributor to PHANZ, driven by her commitment to enhancing Māori well-being and community health.

You can find both Angelique and Jean’s full profiles on our Māori Caucus webpage HERE.

The PHANZ Māori Caucus advocates for Māori health equity, aligns public health initiatives with Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and integrates Māori values into health approaches. It supports Māori professionals through networking, policy development, and leadership growth, aiming to address health disparities and improve hauora Māori outcomes.

We are excited about the leadership Angelique and Jean will bring to the Māori Caucus and encourage all PHANZ members who whakapapa Māori and have a passion for Māori health to get involved.
