Public Health Association of New Zealand Welcomes Three New Council Members

The Public Health Association of New Zealand is pleased to announce the appointment of three new esteemed members to our Council. Co-Presidents Gail Duncan and Nari Faiers extend a warm welcome to Kylie McKee, Patrick Salmon, and Nivedita Sharma Vij, who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to our organisation.

PHANZ wish to acknowledge our outgoing Council Members, Dr Lifeng Zhou (Asian Caucus seat) and Dr Nicole Coupe (Treasurer) who have both served the maximum 4-years on the PHANZ Council. Dr Lifeng Zhou has served the Asian and Migrant PHA community with dedication and sound leadership. Dr Nicole Coupe has worked tirelessly to support the financial operations and direction of the PHA as Treasurer. We send our sincere thanks and best wishes to you both! Dr Lifeng Zhou continues as a key member of the PHA Asian Caucus and Dr Nicole Coupe remains a member of the PHA Māori Caucus.

Kylie McKee: A Long-time Advocate for Public Health

Kylie McKee, a dedicated and long-time member of the Public Health Association, joins our Council, bringing a wealth of experience and a passion for public health advocacy. With a deep understanding of the challenges facing our communities, Kylie has been actively involved in public health initiatives and community development projects. Her commitment to promoting equitable health outcomes aligns with the mission of the PHA, and we are excited to have her on board.

Kylie has also been appointed to the role of Treasurer for the Public Health Association of New Zealand.

Patrick Salmon: Harnessing a Strong Health Background

Influencer extraordinaire Pat Salmon, has a robust background in public health and steps into the role of Council Member, adding valuable insights to our strategic discussions. Patrick's wealth of experience in health advocacy and management positions him as a key asset to the PHA. His dedication to improving health systems and addressing health disparities resonates with our commitment to advancing the health and well-being of all New Zealanders.

Nivedita Sharma Vij: Representing the Asian Caucus

Nivedita Sharma Vij, as the representative of the Asian Caucus, brings a unique perspective to the Council. Nivedita is a passionate advocate for cultural diversity in public health and has a track record of promoting inclusive policies. Her role as an advocate for the Asian community will contribute to the PHA's efforts to ensure that public health initiatives are culturally sensitive and accessible to all. Nivedita has been a critical member of our PHA Policy Committee and we look forward to continuing to work together to support the vision of the PHA.

 Co-President Gail Duncan remarks: "We are thrilled to welcome Kylie, Patrick, and Nivedita to the PHA Council. Their diverse backgrounds and commitment to public health align seamlessly with our organisation's values. Together, we look forward to advancing our mission and fostering a healthier, more equitable Aotearoa."

Co-President Nari Faiers adds: "The addition of these talented individuals strengthens our Council and enhances our ability to address the complex challenges facing public health in New Zealand. We are confident that Kylie, Patrick, and Nivedita will play pivotal roles in shaping the future direction of the PHA."

Dr Marcus Tamaira, Andrea Meni and Dr Ramil Adhikari (JP) were previously co-opted onto the Council but have now been formally elected and ratified as Council Members at this year’s AGM.

Together, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating for policies, events and activities that promote health equity, public health workforce support, and the overall well-being of our communities.
