Webinar Topic: “The case to strengthen unhealthy food and drink outdoor advertising policies in Auckland”

Presenter Bios: Dr Kelly Garton is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Auckland’s School of Population Health. Her research examines the global and local commercial determinants of health, focusing on food environment regulations such as taxes, labelling, product standards, and marketing restrictions. Recent projects include evaluating the Healthy School Lunch Programme, analysing submissions for the Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Plan, and studying food marketing to children, especially near schools in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

Professor Victoria Egli is a health researcher specialising in child health, health equity, and public health nutrition at the University of Waikato. She has extensive experience leading research projects that utilise co-design and creative approaches. Victoria pioneered the use of Google Street View as a tool to monitor outdoor food environments. Victoria is deeply committed to ensuring that the knowledge generated through her research reaches the people and communities that can benefit most from it.

Webinar Topic: “Age verification and rapid delivery: is alcohol delivered with ID checks in Auckland?”

Presenter Bio: Sarah Sneyd has been passionate about addressing inequities for as long as she can remember. Raised by a mother who was a refugee, Sarah learned early on the importance of equity and social justice. She transitioned from a successful career in property management to focus on the equitable health and wellbeing of communities.

Sarah earned a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree from the University of Auckland, graduating as a Distinguished Graduate, and has received multiple awards for excellence, alongside several nominations. She has worked at the grassroots level to reduce the many harms caused by alcohol, beginning in South Auckland's primary care and maternity spaces. More recently, Sarah has contributed to policy development and health promotion at Alcohol Healthwatch, continuing her dedication to improving health outcomes and reducing harm in communities.

Webinar Topic: “Tackling the commercial determinants of health: the mission and mahi of Health Coalition Aotearoa.”

Presenter Bios: Professor Lisa Te Morenga is a nutrition and Māori health researcher at Massey University’s Research Centre for Hauora and Health in Whanganui-a-Tara. A Rutherford Discovery Fellow and Principal Investigator at the Riddet Centre of Research Excellence, her work focuses on improving health through access to healthy, affordable food. Her research applies basic nutrition evidence to enhance health, inform food policy, and address health inequities within Māori and Pacific communities.

Dr David Galler, an Intensive Care Specialist at Middlemore Hospital for over 30 years, held various leadership roles in the healthcare system, including Vice President and President of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists. He was also the Principal Medical Advisor to the Director General and Ministers of Health. In 2016, he volunteered in Samoa, improving child healthcare, and was named Samoa Observer Person of the Year. Dr Galler co-founded an Environmental Sustainability Group that reduced carbon emissions by 27%.

Webinar Topic: “The FDA has proposed nicotine levels are cut in cigarettes to radically reduce the smoking rate. NZ should do the same!”

Presenter Bio: Chris Bullen is a Professor of Public Health at the University of Auckland's School of Population Health and a member of HCA's Smokefree Expert Advisory Group.

A public health physician with over 20 years of experience, he has worked in clinical and public health roles in low-income primary care settings both internationally and in New Zealand. His research focuses on innovative ways to help people quit smoking, including assessing the illicit tobacco trade, studying vaping product waste, and exploring digital tools for chronic respiratory disease management.

Chris is the past president and a fellow of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, a leading global organisation in nicotine and tobacco research.

Webinar Topic: “How can public health speed climate action?”

Presenter Bio: Professor Alistair Woodward, a public health expert and environmental advocate, serves as a Professor at the University of Auckland and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Epidemiology. His work examines the relationship between environmental factors, health, and climate action.

In the webinar "How Can Public Health Speed Climate Action?", he discussed public health’s role in shaping climate policy. Woodward identified four key actions for public health professionals: sharing information on climate change’s health effects, advocating for health protection, influencing policymakers, and engaging in activism. His presentation highlighted the importance of public health in mitigating climate change impacts and driving necessary policy change, emphasising his expertise in epidemiology, environmental health, and global health equity.

Webinar Topic: Te Whare Takatāpui framework

Presenter Bio: Dr Elizabeth Kerekere is a renowned academic, advocate, and leader in the Māori LGBTQIA+ community. She has been instrumental in developing the Te Whare Takatāpui framework, which aims to create safe, inclusive spaces for Māori queer and gender-diverse individuals.

By blending Māori cultural values with contemporary identity and gender concepts, Dr Kerekere advocates for the wellbeing of whānau.

In a recent webinar, she highlighted how this framework can promote inclusivity and support Takatāpui individuals in Aotearoa New Zealand. Her work emphasises the importance of cultural understanding in addressing health and social challenges faced by gender-diverse and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Webinar Topic: Healthy Futures - Protecting Our Whānau, One Breath at a Time

Presenter Bio: Dr Nikki Turner was a distinguished General Practitioner and the Medical Director of the Immunisation Advisory Centre (IMAC) in Wellington, New Zealand.

With over 20 years of experience, she contributed to vaccine research, policy, and service delivery globally. Her work focused on preventing vaccine-preventable diseases, improving national immunisation programs, and addressing health disparities, especially among Māori and Pasifika communities.

As a Professor at the University of Auckland, Dr Turner advocated for public health and vaccine accessibility. In her webinar, "Healthy Futures: Protecting Our Whānau, One Breath at a Time," she shared strategies for enhancing respiratory health and immunisation in New Zealand communities.

Webinar Topic: Coping with harassment and abuse and holding your employer to account for its policies.

Presenter Bio: Associate Professor Siouxsie Wiles is a microbiologist and science communicator. She studied medical microbiology at the University of Edinburgh and earned her PhD in Oxford. After nearly a decade at Imperial College London, she moved to New Zealand in 2009 and now leads the Bioluminescent Superbugs Lab, researching new antibiotics and bacterial evolution. Passionate about science communication, she engages the public through social media, art collaborations, and a children’s show. Her book Antibiotic Resistance: The End of Modern Medicine? was published in 2017. She has received numerous awards, including the NZ Prime Minister’s Science Prize and the Callaghan Medal. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she partnered with cartoonist Toby Morris to create widely used educational graphics. She was named one of the BBC’s 100 Influential Women of 2020 and Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year in 2021.

Presenter Bio: Angelique Reweti's (Ngāpuhi) primary focus is on teaching and researching in the field of Public Health and Hauora Māori.

Her academic and professional journey is anchored in the exploration of how whānau and community-based initiatives can improve Māori health outcomes.

In a world where discussions around Māori health often dwell on deficits, she is determined to steer the conversation towards empowerment, resilience, and the inherent strengths within Māori communities.

Her approach is not merely about changing the narrative; it's about creating environments where the wellbeing of whānau and communities is celebrated and nurtured.
