The Public Health Association of New Zealand (PHANZ) participated in the Australian Public Health Conference 2024 in Perth, where Dr Cadence Kaumoana, Chief Executive Officer of PHANZ, was invited as an opening speaker. The invitation allowed PHANZ to contribute to discussions on public health leadership, governance, and health equity.
Dr Kaumoana’s presentation focused on Indigenous leadership and governance, emphasising how Māori health leadership strengthens public health systems. She highlighted the importance of embedding Indigenous knowledge into decision-making processes to achieve more equitable health outcomes.
Joining Dr Kaumoana was Mr Patrick Salmon, a Council Member of PHANZ, who co-presented with her. Together, they shared perspectives on cultural intelligence, leadership, and the significance of Indigenous-led health responses, demonstrating the practical benefits of kaupapa-driven approaches to public health.
“This was a valuable opportunity to share insights from Aotearoa’s experience with Indigenous health leadership,” stated Dr Kaumoana. "It’s crucial that governance structures reflect values that support community well-being and equity to enhance health outcomes."
PHANZ continues to strengthen its relationship with PHAA to enhance collaboration on health equity and Indigenous health leadership. This partnership enables both organisations to address shared challenges and develop culturally competent approaches that improve community well-being across Aotearoa and Australia.
Key themes of the conference included health equity, workforce resilience, and the role of climate justice in shaping public health systems. PHANZ continues to prioritise these issues through its partnerships, advocacy, and community-led initiatives.
