WHY DOES TRANSPORT POVERTY MATTER FOR HEALTH?

The accessibility and mobility provided by the transport system is a building block of hauora. Transport is a facilitator and a social determinant of health. It enables access to destinations and social connections that are important for health, such as employment, education, food, cultural and leisure activities, and health services.  

 

Transport Poverty occurs when people do not have access to or cannot afford, safe and appropriate transport necessary for good health and wellbeing, or when the cost of travelling is a burden.
